When it comes to your bones, you definitely want the most accurate means to diagnose osteoporosis and assess your fracture risk. Clay County Hospital is proud to announce they have upgraded to a duel energy state of the art bone densitometry machine. Medicare, as well as most other insurance providers will fully cover a bone density exam every other year for patients that meet the criteria. You may need the test if you are at risk for osteoporosis (loss of bone mass). Talk to your physician if you are at risk.
Risk Factors:
Family history of osteoporosis
Caucasian or Asian decent
Thin or small frame
Smoker
Excessive alcohol
Too little exercise
Too little calcium
Previous broken bone that resulted from a minor injury
Early menopause or removal of ovaries
Certain medications (steroids or thyroid hormones)
On the day of your test wear comfortable clothes without metal zippers, snaps or buttons such as a sweat suit or gym clothes. It may be necessary to change into a patient gown. You will be asked to complete a questionnaire and provide a list of your medications. The test usually takes approximately 30 minutes. Your bone density test results will be forwarded to your physician.
